Operation ‘Curupira’ seizes more than 500 logs of wood in a storage area in the forest

An operation called “Curupira”, coordinated by the Public Security and Social Defense Secretary of Pará, together with the State Secretary of Environment (Semas), resulted in the seizure of over 500 logs of wood found in a storage area in the middle of the forest located in the Novo Progresso region on Saturday, April 15th.

The operation had been carrying out visible activities in the region for over 30 days, and with the support of two aircraft from the Public Security Aerial Group (Graesp), security agents were tracking ten points identified as possible areas of environmental degradation when they identified the storage area camouflaged in the middle of the forest.

The Public Security and Social Defense Secretary, Ualame Machado, highlighted the importance of the operation in combating environmental crimes in the state: “With this seizure, we add a successful productivity in this operation that aims for short, medium and long-term actions to combat deforestation in our territory.”

The Deputy Operations Secretary of Segup, Luciano de Oliveira, explained that the seizure is part of the planning of Operation Curupira, which has three fixed bases established in the cities of São Félix, Uruará and Novo Progresso and aims to combat illegal mining, illegal logging, and deforestation.

A team from the Special Missions Battalion of the Military Police is already at the seizure site to guard the wood, which will be examined and measured by the State Scientific Police. Among the various species of wood found are amarelão, jatobá, angelim, maçaranduba, and others.

Operation Curupira is based on Decree No. 2,887, which establishes a state of environmental emergency in 15 municipalities in Pará, and continues to operate in the region to combat environmental crimes and preserve the environment.
