At the World Economic Forum, Governor Helder Barbalho debates financial impacts due to climate change

State Governor and president of the Consortium of Governors of the Legal Amazon, Helder Barbalho defended the bioeconomy as a new sustainable economic concept

According to organizers of the World Economic Forum, held on the European continent, extreme heat is one of the most pressing tests of resilience for the economy and society, projected to kill 60,000 people and cause $2.4 trillion in lost productivity. per year until 2030. The topic was on the agenda this Tuesday (17th), in Davos, Switzerland, during the annual meeting of the Forum.

The governor of Pará and president of the Consortium of Governors of the Legal Amazon (CAL), Helder Barbalho, participated in the debate and inserted the theme of Bioeconomy as an important alternative for the preservation of the Amazon, bringing the socioeconomic development of the region and, consequently, the contribution for the global climate balance. 

“There is a need to act preventively, building economy concepts that can allow people to have access to employment, income and opportunities and, of course, in conciliation with the environment. I was able to show that the State of Pará not only combats illegal deforestation but has also acted in the creation of laws”.

The head of the State Executive explains that Pará has advanced in the construction of its own laws, transforming them into public policies of the State and providing more legal security in actions for the preservation of the environment, in addition to strengthening the Bioeconomy and standing forest as sustainable vectors of development. “Laws such as the State on Climate Change, State Policy for the Climate and the law that contributed to the Amazônia Agora Program” , he exemplified. 

“It is important that we build a new economic concept based on the Bioeconomy with the living forest and investments in science, technology and innovation added to the knowledge of the forest, attracting opportunities”, ponders Helder Barbalho. 

Government reinforces candidacy for Belém to host COP 30  – With the capital of Pará leading the way as a candidate to host the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30) in 2025, Governor Helder Barbalho took advantage of his presence at the World Economic Forum to reinforce the unique opportunity on the planet to discuss climate change within the Amazon biome.

“We are deeply optimistic that Brazil has the authority and, above all, stature in terms of diplomatic relevance for having the Amazon in its territory and that we will be hosting COP 30 in 2025. As president of the Consortium of Governors of the Legal Amazon, we articulate , and Brazil has just presented Belém as a candidate city to host what is the most important event on the climate agenda in the world” , he said.

World Economic Forum –  This is the second consecutive edition that Governor Helder Barbalho has been invited to participate in the World Economic Forum. The theme of this edition, held until next Friday (20), is “Collaborating in a fragmented world” . The Forum is recognized as the main international economic agenda for bringing together several world leaders. More than 50 heads of state and 200 ministers of central banks are expected, among almost 2,700 participants.
