Discover the SOS Amazônia project
- Promote the conservation of biodiversity and the growth of environmental awareness in the Amazon.
In the 1980s, large areas of forest were replaced by pastures in the Amazon. At that time, the movement of rubber tappers, in Acre, joined forces to stop the devastation and guarantee the right of possession of their positions. Moved by the resistance of the guardians of the forest, on September 30, 1988, in the city of Rio Branco, state of Acre, professors, university students and representatives of the social movement, including the activist and rubber tapper Chico Mendes, created the Associação SOS Amazônia, with the main objective of defending the extractive cause and protecting the Amazon Forest, supporting traditional populations.
In a scenario of land occupation conflicts, the organization dedicated itself to displaying data and photos on deforestation in the region in the public square, denouncing the threats suffered by rubber tappers, distributing information materials and talking to people about the theme, aiming to mobilize society and facilitate understanding of the causes and consequences of the destruction that was taking place.
Faced with the delicate moment that extractivists were going through, in addition to awareness campaigns, the institution soon needed to develop projects, propose and implement public policies focused on the dissemination of models and practices for the preservation of biodiversity and sustainable development, initiatives that guide, on a daily basis, the duty to fulfill the mission of SOS Amazônia, which is “To promote the conservation of biodiversity and the growth of environmental awareness in the Amazon” .
