Helder Barbalho takes office as president of the Legal Amazon Consortium and promises to strengthen the bioeconomy

The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB), was sworn in as president of the Legal Amazon Consortium this Wednesday (04), in Brasília (DF). He was unanimously elected to the post, on December 19th, in a vote held among the governors of the nine states of the Legal Amazon: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Maranhão, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins.

In addition to the members and governors of the consortium states, the event was attended by the Minister of Cities, Jader Filho, and of Integration and Regional Development, Waldez Góes, in addition to international representations, members of the Federal Congress, mayors, state deputies and councilors.

Helder Barbalho will head the collegiate during 2023, replacing the former governor of Amapá, Waldez Góes (PDT). The new president of the Amazônia Legal Consortium highlighted that he will act for the union and strengthening between the Amazonian states, valuing common and strategic guidelines. “The objective is to leverage our region more and more towards a leading role in the compatibility and conciliation of sustainable development with social development”, he emphasized.

The new president said that, “all this, so that we can strengthen biodiversity and all the opportunities arising from the standing forest, with its bioeconomy opportunity, transforming the forest into a commodity and, consequently, into a new economic asset for job creation. and income”.

First agenda  – Also in Brasília, Helder Barbalho will meet at the end of the day with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chancellor Mauro Vieira, to reaffirm the commitment of the Amazônia Legal Consortium to host an edition of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP) . “I will be with the minister to formalize the wish that the Amazon can host COP 30 in 2025”, he said.

“We will increasingly provoke the world to discuss the Amazon from the perspective of Brazilians and Amazonians. Particularly, being able to provoke the United Nations to bring the biggest event in the world to discuss the climate, which is the COP, to discuss in loco the knowledge of our reality with riches, biomes and also our social challenges, and with that build a future that reconcile people and the forest”, highlighted Helder Barbalho.

Governor Helder Barbalho also stressed that his management will be fundamental for the Consortium to play a leading role in the agenda involving the Amazon before the Federal Government. The head of the Executive of Pará pondered the need to recover the federative pact and the institutional partnerships between the states and the Union.

Sustainable development  – ​​The Interstate Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Legal Amazon is formed by nine states, which occupy 59% of the Brazilian territory and are home to more than 29.3 million people.

The Consortium has the mission of accelerating the sustainable development of the Legal Amazon, in an integrated and cooperative manner, considering regional opportunities and challenges. Its objective is to be a global reference in articulation, strategy and governance, to transform the Legal Amazon into a competitive, integrated and sustainable region by 2030.
