Public hospitals in Pará receive an honorable mention for sustainability and environmental preservation actions
Public hospitals of the Government of Pará, managed by the National Institute for Social and Human Development (INDSH), in partnership with the State Department of Public Health (Sespa), received, this month, an Honorable Mention certificate for the “Friend of the Environment” award 2022”, granted by the State Department of Health of São Paulo, an initiative that recognizes the efforts of health services that develop sustainable projects to preserve the environment within the scope of the Unified Health System (SUS).
These are health units that participated, for more than a year, in the methodology of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Selo Ouro Program, created in 2008, since then responsible for adapting the GHG Protocol method to the Brazilian context and developing calculation tools for emission estimates of greenhouse gases (GHG). The mention aims to encourage this important work in the search for a low-carbon and more sustainable hospital activity.
Among the state public hospitals are: In Belém: Hospital Jean Bitar (HJB), Hospital Metropolitano de Urgência e Emergência (HMUE) and Integrated Center for Inclusion and Rehabilitation (CIIR); in addition to the Regional Public Hospital of Marajó (HRPM), in Breves; Caetés Regional Public Hospital (HRPC), in Capanema; and Thailand General Hospital (HGT).
For the president of the HRPC Sustainability Committee, Iago Tobias, the award comes to prove the activities carried out at the unit. “Daily, we are managing the social, environmental and financial impacts that the HRPC provides, to be as sustainable as possible. Our commission has worked to ensure that these impacts are as small as possible and is always working with new ideas to provide the best actions in these aspects. It is HRPC always thinking about improving, more and more, the provision of services to users, through sustainability”.
According to Arline Faccin, coordinator of the Center for Quality and Patient Safety (NQSP) at HJB, for six years the management has maintained its commitment to controlling Greenhouse Gases (GHGs), emitted through its daily operation, being an active member of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, having its annual waste inventory classified as Gold Seal. Throughout this year, the Hospital Unit’s Sustainability Commission developed several actions, among them, the replacement of fluorescent lamps with LED lamps and lamps, which have already guaranteed about 90% of replacements.
There is also the “Recycling” project, which aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. “The honorable mention of Hospital Amigo do Meio Ambiente” is recognition of the quality work carried out by all, in favor of health, not only for the users served at the institution, but a commitment to the health of the community and the planet”.
