Marina Silva sees COP30 as a chance to revitalize global multilateralism
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva , stated that COP30 represents a historic opportunity to strengthen multilateralism in global climate governance. The statement was made during an event in Brasília this week, as part of the preparation for the conference, which will be held in Belém , Pará, in 2025.
According to Marina, the United Nations climate change meeting goes beyond the environmental agenda. She believes the meeting will be essential for restoring trust between countries and reaffirming collective commitments to combat global warming. “COP30 is a chance to reconfigure multilateralism and make international cooperation more effective,” she emphasized.
The minister argued that Brazil has a strategic role in this new scenario, particularly by hosting the conference in a symbolic region like the Amazon. She emphasized that the country must lead the debate on ecological transition and climate justice, including the role of indigenous peoples and traditional communities.
Marina also emphasized that the revival of Brazil’s environmental policy has been an important signal to the international community. “Brazil has regained respect for its environmental performance. This lends credibility to our leadership at COP30,” she stated.
During the event, the minister pointed out that one of the biggest challenges of the conference will be building consensus around climate finance and meeting emissions reduction targets. To achieve this, it will be essential to involve developed and developing countries in a shared responsibility approach.
COP30, which will take place in November 2025, is expected to bring together representatives from nearly 200 countries, as well as civil society organizations, businesses, and indigenous leaders. The Brazilian government expects the event to mark a historic turning point in the global fight against the climate crisis.
Marina Silva’s speech reflects Brazil’s strategy of repositioning itself as an international environmental leader, using COP30 as a diplomatic showcase and an example of participatory and sustainable governance.
