Pará initiates discussions to develop the State Plan for the Recovery of Native Vegetation

Pará has begun the development of the State Plan for the Recovery of Native Vegetation of Pará (PRVN) through a meeting organized by the Working Group (GT-PRVN). The Plan aims to implement the State Program for the Recovery of Native Vegetation, which will directly impact vegetation cover, following the goal of the State Plan Amazon Now (PEAA) to restore 5.65 million hectares by 2030.

Subgroups within the PRVN Working Group are involved in the development of the Plan’s deliverables and the adjustment of its methodology. The first step is to conduct a diagnostic study to compile, organize, and describe socio-environmental indicators related to the recovery of native vegetation in Pará.

The second phase will involve the organization of regional seminars in Belém, Marabá, Altamira, and Santarém in June and July. These events will help identify strengths and areas that need development to promote large-scale restoration implementation in Pará.

PRVN aims to achieve the regeneration target set in the State Plan Amazon Now, launched in 2020 as the state’s action platform for implementing a sustainable development model. One of the objectives is to reduce gross greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by at least 37% from the baseline average by 2030.

The GT-PRVN includes representatives from various institutions such as the State Secretariat for Environment and Sustainability (Semas), Federal University of Pará (UFPA), Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), among others. The Working Group is divided into General Coordination, Review Committee, Integration Committee, Organization and Consolidation, and Working Subgroups.

The State Plan for the Recovery of Native Vegetation was launched by the Government of Pará in late 2022 during the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 27) and established the Working Group (Decree No. 2,750/2022). In December of the same year, the state amended its State Policy on Climate Change (PEMC) to incorporate the State Program for the Recovery of Native Vegetation.

This initiative seeks to integrate different strategies for recovery within its territory, formulating and implementing governance and planning instruments to scale up actions, making it a pioneering initiative in Brazil.
