Governor of Pará emphasizes bioeconomy as an alternative for development at Lide Brazil Conference London
Helder Barbalho showcases preservation and regeneration efforts in the Amazon biome, and emphasizes the importance of bioeconomy for the socioeconomic development of the country.
Brazilian and British authorities, entrepreneurs, and investors gathered on Thursday (20) and Friday (21) in London, England, to discuss Brazil’s socioeconomic development at the Lide Brazil Conference London. The environment and economic and social development were the main topics discussed on the first day of the event.
Helder Barbalho, governor of Pará, led the panel “Environment: Brazil’s New Positioning,” where he presented the actions being developed by the state for the preservation and regeneration of the Amazon biome. The governor highlighted bioeconomy as an alternative for socioeconomic development in the region.
Barbalho explained that bioeconomy, with investments in innovation, technology, and research, can boost new businesses, generate green jobs, and reconcile development and sustainability. He detailed the involvement of communities in the process and mentioned that the bioeconomy could generate $120 billion in business, according to the State of Pará’s Bioeconomy Plan, presented at the last COP in Egypt.
The governor emphasized the importance of efficiently conserving preserved areas, valuing the living and standing forest, and generating social and economic benefits for surrounding communities. Barbalho argued that Brazil has not yet recognized the potential of bioeconomy as a viable and sustainable trend for the future.
During the event, Helder Barbalho called for the need for the National Congress to regulate the Carbon Credit Framework, believing that the measure would allow for the potential conservation of biodiversity in the country to be utilized. The governor informed that Pará intends to open a competition for the concession of at least three state public areas, totaling approximately 4,200,000 hectares, with the aim of conservation and commercialization of credits through the REDD+ mechanism.
The Lide Brazil Conference London discusses Brazil’s opportunities in the United Kingdom and the European Union, addressing issues such as the environment, Brazil’s economic and social development, as well as business environment perspectives and investor confidence. Among the participants on the first day of the event were Brazilian and British authorities, entrepreneurs, and representatives of financial institutions.
