Congresswoman Elcione Barbalho leads a Parliamentary Front to strengthen Brazil’s candidacy as the host of COP 30 in 2025

The initiative aims to consolidate the country's leadership in the international debate on sustainable development, emission reduction, and adaptation to climate impacts.

In 2025, Latin America will host the COP, and Brazil, which has already applied, seeks to consolidate its leadership in the international debate on sustainable development, emission reduction, mitigation, and adaptation to climate impacts. The selection of countries that host UN climate conferences follows a regional rotation.

Congresswoman Elcione Barbalho (MDB-PA) requested the registration of the Parliamentary Front for the Strengthening of COP-30 in Brazil, in accordance with Article 15 of the Internal Rules of the Chamber of Deputies and the Mesa Act No. 69 of 2005. The initiative aims to promote the strengthening of Brazil’s candidacy as the host of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-30), scheduled to take place in 2025.

The choice of Brazil as the conference venue is supported by 209 federal deputies, which corresponds to about 40.76% of the 513 in the Legislature. This highlights the country’s relevance regarding the fight against climate change, the development of the bioeconomy, and the preservation of the environment in the Amazon. Given that Brazil has the world’s largest tropical forest, it is essential that it plays a leadership role in combating climate change.

The Parliamentary Front aims to promote broad work on the climate change agenda, bioeconomy, conservation of biodiversity, and environmental preservation in the Amazon region. This work includes strengthening Brazil’s candidacy through dialogues with the United Nations (UN) and other countries interested in implementing the international climate agenda.

In this context, the Parliamentary Front seeks to mobilize incentives and implementation efforts that allow Brazil to position itself as the center of discussions on climate change on the planet. The focus goes beyond changes in land use and forests, encompassing issues related to climate finance, green economy, forest and biodiversity conservation, aligned with the country’s interests and the fulfillment of global goals for reducing carbon emissions in the context of harmonious development of countries.
