Operation Curupira combats environmental crimes in Novo Progresso
The Government of the State of Pará, through the Secretariats of Public Security and Social Defense (Segup) and Environment and Sustainability (Semas), has been intensifying Operation Curupira to combat environmental crimes at three fixed bases in the state. The third permanent base, installed in the municipality of Novo Progresso, completed 15 days of overt actions in the region on Monday (27).
The operation has more than 85 staff, including Semas technicians and public security agents, who have already carried out several seizures and embargoes in the region. Results include 11 seizures, seven summons, eight embargo terms, eight disabled machines, nine infringement notices, two excavators seized, as well as 20 dismantled gold mines and 22 identified deforested areas.
According to the Secretary of Public Security and Social Defense, Ualame Machado, the success of the operation is due to the joint work of the intelligence sectors and the security agents in the field. He emphasized that the operation has been obtaining positive results in Novo Progresso and further strengthening the fight against environmental crimes in the state.
Operation Curupira has two other fixed bases, one located in the municipality of São Félix do Xingu and another in the city of Uruará. In addition, the operation conducts inspections and patrols daily, both by land and air, with the support of an aircraft that moves to assist in the prevention and combat of environmental crimes in Pará.
The operation involves the Civil and Military Police, State Scientific Police, Military Fire Department, Secretariat of Environment and Sustainability (Semas), and State Penitentiary Administration Secretariat (Seap). The Public Security Air Group (Graesp), linked to Segup, is responsible for logistical and air support in all bases corresponding to the operation.
Operation Curupira is an important initiative of the government of Pará to combat environmental crimes, especially illegal deforestation and environmental degradation. With the operation’s intensified action in Novo Progresso and other regions of the state, a significant reduction in these crimes is expected, ensuring the preservation of natural resources and the quality of life of the Paraense population.
