Government of Pará promotes the 1st Conference for an Amazon We Want

The government of Pará, through the State Secretariat of Environment and Sustainability (Semas) and the Scientific Panel for the Amazon (SPA), will hold the “1st Conference for an Amazon We Want” starting next Wednesday, March 8. The event will take place at the Maria Sylvia Nunes Theater, at Estação das Docas, and aims to promote dialogue among members of different sectors of society to discuss the environmental agenda of the Amazon region.

The event will be attended by invited authorities such as the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change of Brazil (MMA), the President of the Arapyaú Institute Council, the Co-Presidents of the SPA, the Director of the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (Ipam) and other Federal Government authorities, as well as rectors and directors of universities and research institutions operating in Pará, Brazil, and abroad.

During the event, topics such as the protection of Amazon biodiversity and sustainable socio-economic development of the region will be discussed, as well as suggestions for priority themes and actions that the Scientific Panel for the Amazon should consider in the construction of its 2023-2025 Strategic Plan. The Scientific Panel for the Amazon will hold its first face-to-face meeting in Belém from March 8 to 10 and will advance its plans for the next three years.

“It is very relevant to discuss the Amazon being in the Amazon. The exchange of knowledge will be favored by the realization of the event in the capital of Pará, which has also already been announced as a candidate to host COP 30,” said the Secretary of Environment and Sustainability of Pará, Mauro O’de Almeida.

The event also seeks to promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas among members of different sectors of society and reinforce the candidacy of the capital of Pará to host the United Nations Climate Conference (COP 30) in 2025. The event is supported by the Paraense Emílio Goeldi Museum (MPEG), Federal University of Pará (UFPA), and Federal Rural University of the Amazon (UFRA).

The Conference for an Amazon We Want is an important step towards protecting the Amazon biome and the socio-economic development of all Amazonian populations. The event represents a unique opportunity to promote a stronger and more collaborative environmental agenda.
