In a meeting with the Norwegian embassy, climate and sustainable development in the Amazon are discussed
Norwegian Ambassador congratulated the State of Pará for the presidency of the Legal Amazon Consortium (CAL)
The Amazon was the center of dialogue at a working meeting between the Norwegian ambassador to Brazil, Odd Magne Rudd, and the environment secretaries of the states that make up the Legal Amazon, at the embassy headquarters, in Brasília, on Friday, 27. The meeting was to bring the nations closer together, and to assess investment possibilities in the region in favor of reducing deforestation and the bioeconomy, in particular. The meeting was part of the 1st Ordinary Meeting of 2023 of the Forum of Secretaries of the Environment of the Legal Amazon, coordinated by the Task Force of the Governors for Climate and Forests (GCF Task Force).
The secretaries presented the realities and needs of each State, which were heard by Odd Magne Rudd, as well as representatives from other countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, who also participated in the meeting. The Norwegian ambassador highlighted the importance of cooperation between the countries.
“There are real opportunities for reducing deforestation and bioeconomy in the Amazon. It is necessary to keep the forest standing. We are here to listen to the opportunities and challenges of each one. Together we can make a difference and be able to start over. To show that what values human beings is the standing forest”, pointed out Odd Magne Rudd. On the occasion, the ambassador congratulated Pará for the presidency of the Consortium of the Legal Amazon (CAL), which has the governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho, at the forefront.
The institutional actions that strengthen the environmental policy in Pará and create subsidies for continuous actions of investments in the bioeconomy, project structuring, elaboration and implementation of the REDD+ jurisdictional system, for example, were mentioned by Mauro O’de Almeida, secretary of environment and sustainability of Pará, by exposing the exchange that can exist between the countries.
“We have a climate, environmental, social and economic emergency. The state of Pará is putting together decrees, norms and plans. Our priorities are the bioeconomy plan, vegetation restoration and REDD+, which we want to do in the next four years. We still need institutional strengthening, digital transformation at Semas, knowing how to make projects that are lasting. We need all of this and that you can give it, transfer technology and knowledge. We need to exercise decentralization, the federative pact, with decentralized actions, but coordinated by the Federal Government” , said O’de Almeida, adding, “We know where to get, we know how to get there and we need help”.
