Belém is made official as the Brazilian headquarters to host COP 30
Capital of Pará was defined as host after meeting between President Lula and Governor Helder Barbalho, held this Wednesday (11), in Brasília
After meeting with president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, this Wednesday morning (11), in Brasília, the governor of Pará and president of the Interstate Consortium for Sustainable Development of the Legal Amazon (CAL), Helder Barbalho, informed that the Pará’s capital, Belém, is the Brazilian city chosen as the country’s official candidate to host an edition of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 30) in 2025.
“The president has just announced that Belém is the city chosen by Brazil to host the COP and has already forwarded to Itamaraty the official statement that Brazil reinforces its candidacy and Belém is the city chosen to host COP 30, in 2025, representing a historic moment in which the Amazon will be hosting the largest climate discussion event in the world” .

In a video released by the Planalto Palace, alongside Governor Helder Barbalho, President Lula states that the choice for Belém is part of a commitment made during the last edition of the COP.
“I am with my friend Helder congratulating the city of Belém on its 407th anniversary tomorrow (12th) and giving good news that the Itamaraty has formalized the city of Belém as a candidate for the dispute to hold the COP 30. I had made a commitment in Egypt , at COP 27, that COP 30 could be held in Brazil. I hope we are there to make a beautiful COP”.

Arrangements for Belém to host an edition of the COP were initiated by Governor Helder Barbalho in the last edition of the event, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, when the opportunity arose, in addition to inviting Lula, as president-elect, to join the entourage of the States of the Legal Amazon and, during the event, deliver a public letter on behalf of the governors of the Legal Amazon pleading that Lula articulate with the UN the holding of an edition of the COP in Brazil, especially in the Amazon region.
Regarding the meeting with the President of the Republic, Helder Barbalho pondered that the Federal Government is in line with the states of the Legal Amazon in understanding the strengthening of inspection, repression and socioeconomic development actions in the region. Barbalho also spoke about the understanding of public policies involving carbon credits to finance actions.
“We are in line with the fact that it is essential that we build a transversal group to discuss a development model for the Amazon that goes through the confrontation, in an active and strong way, in the fight against environmental illegalities, but, on the other hand, builds, in a transversal way, a new model of economic development with the transition of land use”
