COP 27: Pará may sell carbon credits to the LEAF Coalition
By reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, Pará will be able to sell carbon credits
During the holding of the panel “From commitment to action: turning the game of deforestation in the Amazon”, within the agenda of the Legal Amazon Consortium at the 27th United Nations Climate Conference (COP 27) this Wednesday (16), in Egypt , the Government of Pará signed a letter of intent with the LEAF Coalition (Reducing Emissions through Accelerating Forest Financing).
“This letter of intent is a step forward that we signed in Glasgow (COP 26), which was just a nod, so this letter was a next step, which demonstrates that Pará intends to trade carbon credits, according to LEAF and, therefore, will be able to access the value of U$$ 1.5 billion dollars. So, as the State shows its performance, reducing global emissions of greenhouse gases, it becomes willing to sell carbon credits to the LEAF Coalition”, explains Mauro O’de Almeida, Secretary of the Environment and Sustainability (Semas).
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Emergente and the LEAF Coalition was signed by the state governor, Helder Barbalho, during COP 26, in Glasgow, Sweden, last year. The purpose was to attract resources from the reduction of deforestation in the Amazon, with this, the organizations expressed mutual interest in cooperating institutionally, to facilitate possible future transactions between the states of the Legal Amazon and the participants of the Leaf Coalition, with a view to reducing emissions. of carbon.
The director of the Norwegian International Climate and Forests Initiative (NICFI) participated in the panel; VK Kishore, Vice President and Global Head of Smallholder Seed Vegetables and Sustainability at Bayer, and James Mulligan, Head of Amazon Carbon Neutralizer.
